Introduction to EPDM Roofing

EPDM has become a popular choice for flat roofing in both the residential and commercial markets due to its impressive array of benefits as a rubber membrane roof solution. If you're looking to find out more about EPDM and its uses for EPDM rubber roofing products and its sealing abilities, read on.

What is EPDM Roofing?

Its often referred to as EPDM rubber roofing or EPDM rubber. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, which means it is a synthetic rubber-based product. EPDM is produced for a wide range of sealing products, with its sheet format used to protect from or retain water in roofing, façades and pond, lake and reservoir liners.

EPDM is not a new product, with the sheet form having been used in the above applications across the world since the 1960s and 1970s (we sold our first EPDM in 1974!)

What are the benefits of EPDM as a roofing membrane?

  • EPDM is highly durable, it has been proven to last more than 50 years.

  • EPDM is highly flexible, making it fit well into angle changes and details with no stress.

  • EPDM can elongate up to 300%, allowing for building movement without damage to the membrane.

  • EPDM is not affected by weather factors such as UV, ozone, temperatures or frost.

  • EPDM is proven to be stable in extremes of temperature between -30°C and +120°C.

  • EPDM does not tear, crack or split with age.

  • EPDM is installed with a cold applied system, so no naked flames are required.

  • EPDM is easy and quick to fit.

  • EPDM requires little maintenance.

  • EPDM is repairable if, in unfortunate cases, damage does occur.
